Call for Applicants for FY2023 “Nadeshiko Brands” and “Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting” Starts Today

September 27, 2023

Since 2012, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) have jointly been selecting companies that are outstanding in terms of encouraging women's empowerment in the workplace and designating them as Nadeshiko Brands.

METI and the TSE will select around 30 companies as Nadeshiko Brands that promote support for all employees " to develop their career consistently from recruitment to promotion" and " to manage to strike a balance between empowerment in the workplace and child rearing (i.e. dual-career and co-parenting) ,” both of which encourage women’s empowerment in the workplace, which contributes to enhancing corporate value.

As a new effort starting in FY2023, METI and the TSE will select outstanding companies apart from Nadeshiko Brands based on their efforts related to "support[ing] dual-career and co-parenting " as "Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting.”

1. Outline of the Nadeshiko Brand

The Nadeshiko Brand is an initiative that aims to introduce certain TSE-listed companies that are outstanding in terms of encouraging women’s empowerment in the workplace as attractive stocks to investors who place an emphasis on improving corporate value in the mid- and long-term, thereby further encouraging investments in such companies and accelerating the efforts by the companies.

In light of the recent trends emphasizing human capital management, METI and the TSE have been selecting outstanding companies, focusing not only on their efforts to encourage women's empowerment in the workplace, but also on whether companies provide the systems and measures to promote women's empowerment that are linked to management strategies and on whether these initiatives contribute to improving corporate value.

2. Implementation policy in FY2023

Considering it indispensable for the empowerment of women in the workplace to promote support for all employees "to develop their career consistently from recruitment to promotion" and " to manage to strike a balance between empowerment in the workplace and child rearing (i.e. dual-career and co-parenting) ,” in the FY2023 Nadeshiko Brand program, METI and the TSE will improve questionnaire items on “dual-career and co-parenting” , and will select around up to 30 companies for their commitments to advancing such efforts.

In addition, apart from Nadeshiko Brands, METI and the TSE will select around 20 companies for their outstanding efforts related to "support[ing] dual-career and co-parenting" as "Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting.”

Companies are eligible to apply for either or both of (1) the Nadeshiko Brand and (2) the Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting, whichever they prefer. (Please note that if a company can only be chosen for 1 category, so if it is selected as a Nadeshiko Brand, the company will not be selected as a Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting.)

Through this initiative for selecting outstanding companies under the Nadeshiko Brand program and the Next Nadeshiko: Companies Supporting Dual-career and Co-parenting program, METI will aim to attract more investor interest towards such companies’ efforts for women’s empowerment in the workplace, and will encourage these companies to accelerate their efforts.
